Two Week Check-Up

Harper had his two week doctor's check-up this morning.  I can't believe he's already thirteen days old.  We have two more weeks to stay out of the public according to his pediatrician.  Needless to say, we've been hanging around the house and hanging on to each moment trying not to miss anything...He's growing up so fast!

At the appointment this morning we had a weight check, and he's only gained three ounces since he left the hospital a week and a half ago.  He left the hospital weighing 6lbs, 12oz.  Today he weighs 6lbs, 15oz.  The doctor isn't worried yet, but they usually like to see babies back to their birth weight or more by two weeks.  He asked me about feedings and on paper his demand and my supply seems sufficient.  So we go again next week to check his weight.  He wants to feed every two or so hours during the day and we usually have to wake him up for night-time feedings every four hours.  Doctor said to keep all of that up...I'm feeling a little insufficient, and I feel bad for Harper.  But I also feel like he nurses mostly to feel comfort and not be nourished.  We'll see what the next week brings...But we have one determined mommy on our hands here.

Harper also had his second heel-stick test today.  His first one was in the hospital.  This is a mandatory blood disorder check in Oregon.  Anyway, the nurse poked his heel while I was holding him and suddenly his face went bright red, and he cried like he's literally never cried before.  He looked like he was in so much pain.  There was nothing his pacifier or I could do to soothe him...So what do I do??  Cry with him....Yep.  He was so sad and apparently hadn't felt pain before then.  I guess the first heel stick (which brought no tears) and the circumcision (again, no tears) are child's play compared to the two week heel stick...?  The poor boy...

On a happier note, Harper had his first real bath at nine days old.  He LOVED it!!  We of course took pictures, and I think we have one that is appropriate for posting on the world wide web!  He loves the warm water and loves the towels that I warm in the dryer while he's bathing, but the transition from warm water to warm towel I think he could do without!

I think that's all for now...We couldn't love him any more....He's still perfect!
